My Grandparents, Beatrice and Percy Hunt owned the village shop/sub Post Office on High Ham village Green (Laburnum House) from approximately 1920 to 1975, the year my Grandmother passed away. Prior to that my Grandmother and her mother (Elizabeth Mears) owned the shop around the corner which was later owned by the Spearings. What happened to it? It has disappeared completely! My Aunt, Dorothy, and my Mother, Eileen, were born in Laburnum House and attended High Ham Primary School, going on to secondary education at the Grammar School (boarding) in Street. My Grandfather fought in the First World War serving in Mesopotamia and India, for very many years he was Church Warden in High Ham and every week would go and wind up the church clock. His, my Grandmother's and my Aunt's ashes are buried in High Ham churchyard. My mother is now 92 years old and lives in Newbury. She, I and my brother, James, have wonderful memories of the village and the lovely people we used to know.
